Buying Organic Food - Part 3

How to make buying organic food affordable

One of the ways we save is by working a fairly large vegetable patch in the garden. If you want to grow your own click here.

Growing our own organic vegetables saves us a lot of cash and we buy the rest of our organic food (other than vegetables and herbs) from local farm shops that do extras. We also use Waitrose on those occasions when the small, local outlets are out of what we need.

Often it can be cheaper to buy from box schemes and local farmers. See what the Food Director of the BBCs Good Food Guide says about it here.

Check our directory of organic food suppliers to find your local supplier.

Let's have a look at what Lesley Waters says about buying organic food and keeping within your budget:

Lesley, a chef, has written a booklet in association with the Organic Milk cooperative (OMSCO), on buying organic food easily and affordably (link for download below).

In the booklet she points out that her family of four switched to organic milk for less than £1 per week. That's about 15p per day for four people to be rid of the chemicals and hormones found in non-organic milk.

On top of that, for the same 15p per day, these four people benefit from higher nutrition and the lovely, warm and satisfying feeling of contributing to animal welfare and environmental health. Lesley of course has the added satisfaction of providing her children with the best milk for their health.

She also makes a significant point about meat. I quote -

Following Lesley's example would mean eating good quality organic meat, still getting plenty of protein and a healthier digestive system. All the advantages mentioned above in relation to organic milk are there for the taking too.

The booklet provides many other ways of making the transition to organic food, easily and affordably. For instance, buying vegetables and fruit in-season is usually cheaper, as is buying from local farm shops and farmers markets. Box-schemes are also booming as a way to buying more cheaply.

This is a handy booklet for anyone wanting to make the switch, even if its a partial switch. It contains some great organic recipes as well as sound advice.
