| Hi Thought for the month The reason that many people cite for not switching to organic food - that it is too expensive - is becoming less of a reason. With the massive increase in growers and retailers, organic food is getting cheaper. At the same time, locally bought organic produce keeps for longer, not only because it reaches you quicker, but because its natural strength and health hasn't been depleted by synthetic chemical contamination. We conducted a test last week. We bought two lettuces - one organic and one non-organic. The non-organic lettuce started wilting and turning yellow on the third day. We were still eating the fresh, crisp and green organic lettuce five days later.
This shows how any difference in price can be recouped in the quality of the produce.
More supermarkets shunning battery eggs
Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks and Spencers have joined the Co-op in stopping the sale of eggs from caged hens. The Co-op have also added 66 pesticides to their 'banned' list. Read more
Organic fraudsters beware - a new way of testing.
Spanish scientists have found a way of testing a product to determine what sort of fertilizer was used in its growth. The composition of Nitrogen isotopes in natural organic fertilizers differ from those synthetically produced. Where fraud is suspected, this, along with already available pesticide testing, may be a great tool. Read more
