New Zealand Organic FoodAround the world, societies are realizing the advantages of organic food and the many benefits of a more natural lifestyle. In 2006, consumers spent $60 billion on organic products from countries across the globe. Many of these international markets are experiencing growth of at least 20% each year. New Zealand is no different. Organic food in New Zealand is currently a $330 million dollar market, with domestic consumption nearly twice that of organic exports. This figure accounts for 1.1% of all food sales in the country, which is considerably lower than the average 3% found in most European countries. The Future of Organic Food in New Zealand A tremendous increase in land available for organic crops, as well as livestock, coupled with a growing consumer awareness concerning the health and environmental benefits of an organic lifestyle have resulted in a consistent rate of growth for the New Zealand organic market. Sales are estimated to hit the $1 billion mark by no later than 2013. Consumers are increasing their consumption of organic food for a number of reasons, according to a recent study conducted by Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ). “65% of people choose to buy certified organic food because they understand that organic systems help the environment,” while others eat organic for the personal health benefits and simply because organically grown foods are more flavourful. There are other factors attributing to the rapid growth of the organic sector in recent years. An OANZ initiated project providing funding for studies and training for farmers interested in converting to organic methods is proposed to create hundreds of new organic farms each year. There are also more concise standards in place to regulate organic production within the domestic market, meaning consumers feel safer about buying organic products. AsureQuality: Organic Certification Standards in New Zealand In October of 2007, two of the leading organic certification agents in New Zealand merged to provide consumers and suppliers with a more regulated market, enforced with consistent inspections and a uniform standard.Asure and AgriQuality combined to create AsureQuality, the leading certification agent in the country. The AsureQuality label assures buyers that the organic food they purchase is truly organic, free of chemicals and grown using natural methods that protect the planet. Organic farms can produce their products knowing that this label can not be used by farms and producers that fail to comply with the organic standard, limiting unworthy competition and increasing confidence in organic products. The AsureQuality organic standard regulates all phases of food production, from planting to transporting. Organic certification requires a production process that protects limited natural resources while benefiting the surrounding environment, including soil fertility and the air and water quality. Toxic substances, including pesticides, fertilizers, and common food additives, are not allowed in any step of production and natural materials are required whenever possible. Certified organic production facilities must keep accurate records of their methods and practices to continue their certification. Regular inspections ensure compliance with the standard in place and have been a tremendous boost to the New Zealand organic food sector in New Zealand. Read about pesticides
